  • Every year United Van Lines, one of the largest moving companies, uses its data and comes out with a report on migration patterns.  It is an interesting source of alternative data to better understand the economy. The study consists of data on household moves from the 48 contiguous states and Washington D.C.
  • In 2010, Washington D.C. was once again the top destination with 64.3 percent of the traffic inbound. Oregon, North Carolina, Idaho, and South Carolina rounded out the top five states.
  • New Jersey saw 62.5 percent of moves were outbound, followed by Michigan, Missouri, North Dakota, and Illinois.
