The 2012 Relocation Reports: Maricopa County, Arizona

NAR Research has produced a total of 3,147 Relocation Reports for U.S. counties. The Relocation Report for each county presents information for that county on county‐to‐county migration flows within the United States, the average incomes of households moving between the specific county and other counties, demographic summaries of homeownership rates, and types of home mortgages (e.g., Conventional, FHA, VA, and FSA/RHS). The most recently available data are for 2010.

Phoenix is the County Seat of Maricopa County. With a population in excess of 3.8 million, the county has a population greater than that of 23 states, and a land area greater than that of seven states. Other urban areas include Mesa and Tempe, as well as a number of other cities.

Total in-migration to the county was 57,410 households, of which 47,321 households came from out of state--for example,

  • Los Angeles County, CA (2,194 households)
  • Clark County, NV (1,248 households)
  • Cook County, IL (997 households)

In-migration from in-state counties included Pinal County (2,476 households) and Pima County (2,341 households). Total out-migration was 60,815 households, of which 45,931 moved to a different state-- for example,

  • Los Angeles County, AZ (2.167 households)
  • Clark County, NV (1,029 households)

Out-migration to counties in Arizona included Pinal County (7,605 households) and Pima County (1,921 households).

The homeownership rate for Maricopa County was reported as 64%. For home sales with mortgages, 60 percent were conventional, 35 percent FHA-insured, and 5 percent VA-guaranteed.

The average income of households moving into Maricopa County was $ 44,937, and the average income of households leaving the county was $ 39,643.
